Consultation has concluded
Urban Design is about making connections between people and places. It can help define how enjoyable or memorable a place is, which can positively contribute to the pedestrian experience, benefitting local businesses and the community overall. By developing Commercial Design Guidelines, the Municipality of North Perth is developing a vision for how the downtowns of Listowel, Atwood, and Monkton will progress and grow. Design Guidelines are not meant to be restrictive. Instead, they offer guidance for developers and property owners who invest in new buildings or property improvements. By participating in this survey, you will have the opportunity to identify design elements that you think should be promoted in the downtown cores of North Perth.
How this survey works
This survey is divided into four different sections and will take no more than 15 minutes. The first section will ask you basic questions about you and your experience living in North Perth. The second section will provide you with 11 objective statements and you will be able to identify which statements you value most. This will help define the objectives of Commercial Design Guidelines. The third section will ask you to look at a series of pictures demonstrating different design components and score them from least favourable to most favourable. The final section will ask you to provide short written responses. These responses will allow you to discuss what you like about the current conditions of our downtowns and what you would like to see in the future.
Moving forward
After you complete this survey, you can provide more comments or suggestions through the Ideas Board (located below). You will be able to upload images with a comment if you choose. We encourage you to take pictures of buildings, architecture or landmarks in North Perth's downtowns and explain what it is about their design that is important to you. You may also do the same with pictures of buildings, architecture or landmarks from other municipalities that you feel set a good example for the sort of design you would like to see in our community. The Ideas Board will remain open for as long as the survey is open to the public.
Lastly, you will be asked in the survey if you are interested in participating in an online focus group. If you choose "yes", the Municipality will contact you to organize focus groups in the coming months to finalize our Commercial Design Guidelines.

Staff visited downtown locations to assess opportunities and assets in Listowel, Atwood, and Monkton.
Staff have designed a survey to engage with residents on urban design matters. Residents have the opportunity to identify design aspects that they feel best represent North Perth.
Staff will gather and analyze the responses from this survey. This data will inform the objectives that will inform how we draft the Commercial Design Guidelines.
Once the Design Guidelines have been drafted, staff will begin to form focus groups with those who have participated in the survey. These focus groups will be formed to best reflect the communities surrounding Listowel, Atwood, and Monkton. Staff aim to have focus groups in early Spring 2021.
The final Commercial Design Guidelines will be presented to North Perth Council for review by late Spring 2021.
