The Future of Galbraith Camp
Consultation has concluded
History of Galbraith Conservation Area
Galbraith Conservation Area is located on Road 140 (North Perth border) in the Township of Perth East. The initial land acquisition by the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority (MVCA) was in 1955, followed by two smaller acquisitions - one in 1973 and another in 1977. The Authority acquired the land with the goals of protecting the headwater and groundwater recharge capabilities of the area, to provide recreational opportunities and to manage the forest resources. The property is 116.4 acres in size and contains a variety of habitats including conifer plantations, upland hardwoods and mixed lowlands. Water features include a small pond and a municipal drain runs through the property from east to west.
The Galbraith Optimist Camp for Kids
The Galbraith Optimist Camp for Kids was a day camp for children ages 5 - 13. The Camp operated six – 1 week long camps, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm daily. Transportation was provided at designated stops throughout Perth County and some surrounding counties.
The Camp property includes a spring fed pond that is perfect swimming and canoeing. There is also a natural forest with hiking trails for nature walks. The spacious site offers a unique opportunity for discovering the great outdoors. The facility includes an indoor pavilion for crafts and activities, a storytelling cabin, washrooms, change rooms, outdoor pavilion and a kitchen.
The End of the Camp
In 2018, the Optimists concluded their camp operations at this location.
Following this notification from the Optimists, the MVCA board passed a resolution to dispose of the property. In accordance with provincial legislation, given that these lands were acquired by the province and funded provincially (at least in part) for many years, the MVCA is required to contact local public agencies (i.e. Local municipality) to determine if the municipality has interest in it.
WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!
